  • Amazing review!! JULIE NEUMARK & THE HIGHLIFES by Bob Leggett (The Examiner)

Julie Neumark is a Renaissance woman who seems to excel at everything she attempts.  With a background in community theater, it was only natural that she would eventually leave her hometown of Cincinatti, Ohio to head to Los Angeles to seek her fame and fortune.Upon arriving in Los Angeles, Julie found work with a recurring role on the Lifetime series "Oh Baby" and guest roles on "Mad About You" and "Gilmore Girls."  In addition, she appeared in such films as "Tattered Angel" and various commercials selling everything from KFC, The Gap and Xbox to Charmin and Puffs tissues. We might have never had this musical gem if fate had not intervened.  In order to capture a part in a stage production, Julie had to play guitar.  After assuring the director that she could play, she promptly went home, stole her brother's guitar and taught herself how to play.  Over the next year, she wavered in her battle between stage and music, with music finally winning out.Julie began to play out around LA, when she came to my attention.  I was a music reviewer for Music Connection Magazine at the time, and jumped at the chance to review her performance.  I knew then that she was going to go far in the business.I continued to follow her career as she played around town, metamorphing from a solo singer-songwriter to a dynamic lead singer of a band, all the while winning competitions and the hearts of many listeners.  She came to the attention of Silverlake's own Beth Hart, and ended up going on tour with Beth. All of this culminated with her debut release, "Dimestore Halo."  I was fortunate enough to attend her CD Release at a little Mexican restaurant that had been the former recording studio for The Doors.  Appropriately, Julie included her cover of "LA Woman" in the show, which was a huge success.Since the release of "Dimestore Halo," Julie has been signed to a major indie label, and transformed from a signer with a band of hired musicians to a true band -- The Highlifes. Julie & the Highlifes recently performed at Hotel Cafe for their first public appearance as a band, and the result was priceless.  The Highlifes are composed of Dave Carduccion guitar, Christian Hogan on drums, John Spence on bass, Anne Siedler on piano and Julie on guitar, harmonica and lead vocals. The energy of the band was intense, and the onstage chemistry was palpable.  With a set that included songs from "Halo" as well as new tunes, Julie & the Highlifes mesmerized the audience.  She hit the stage rocking and never let up.  Julie has an awesome ease on stage that oozes sexuality.  Her love for each member of her band is quite evident, producing the aforementioned chemistry.  Whether showing off new arrangements for "Halo" hits "Bobbi" and "Uncharted Waters," or new numbers like "Rosemary" and "Gasoline," Julie & the Highlifes served notice on the audience that they have arrived.  She also pulled an old song, "Dirty Laundry," out of mothballs and breathed new life into it.  My favorite tune, though, was another brand new song that has the potential to be a big pop/country crossover hit - "Abilene."  Dave's guitar work on that tune was very impressive, and the band is a total class act. They ended the set with "Drink Myself Pretty," which included a sampling of Led Zeppelin's "Dazed and Confused."  All in all, the band used great set rhythm, which ebbed and flowed to its ultimate climax, leaving everyone in the audience wanting more.Julie & the Highlifes are sure to become a household name and a musical favorite.  Trust me when I say that they have what it takes to truly make it in this business.  Come out to their next show and catch them while you still can.  For more information, check out their website atwww.julieneumark.com.  They even have a fan club that you can join and get exclusive downloads and more. Please check them out and drop me a line atlamusiccritic@yahoo.com with your thoughts.  I'd love to know what you think about them.  Hope to see you at a future show.If you enjoy my articles, just click on "Subscribe" above and you'll get an email whenever I post new ones.Find Review here: http://www.examiner.com/los-feliz-in-los-angeles/julie-neumark-the-highlifes-at-hotel-cafe-a-review
