Electronic duo Purity Ring has had a growing buzz since last year, when the band, formed of Megan James and Corin Roddick, released two tracks to great acclaim. Now the Montreal-based pair has a full-length album on the way and we think you should know about them.

Although Purity Ring has only been in existence for a few years, the musicians themselves have been active for a long time. Roddick used to tour with electro outfit Gobble Gobble and has drummed for various bands since he was 14 in his hometown of Edmonton. The group released two songs, “Ungirthed” and “Lofticries,” last spring, which were hailed by critics and fans alike.

The duo followed those singles up with a split 7-inch with Braids last October via Fat Possum. Pitchfork, an early supporter of the group who named them the Best New Band of 2011, said of the tracks, “James’ ghostly, Knife-like vocals are weaved into Roddick’s skittering instrumentals, conveying an emotional and sonic disconnect– fitting since their process involves Roddick sending his beats to James, who then adds her vocals.”

Now the band has just wrapped up their debut album, Shrines, which will be out July 24 via 4AD. Roddick told Pitchfork of the disc, “When you are releasing a constant stream of music, it can cheapen the work– we want each song to linger with people. We also spend an incredibly long time on a track. I have tons of files on my laptop that aren’t finished; sometimes I’ll start something and come back to it later. For example, for ‘Ungirthed,’ I had just written the synth melody but I wasn’t happy with it and left it for about three months. And then I opened it up later and suddenly had an idea. I really like perfecting things.”
