If you’ve ever dabbled in Russian literature to make yourself look more intelligent at a swanky dinner party, here’s something that could be of interest. Tolstoy’s famous novel Anna Karenina is coming to the big screen, so now you can just watch the movie and impress your snooty friends when you can drop plot points like a boss. This is the latest period piece for Pirates star Keira Knightley, and it reunites her with director Joe Wright, who she worked with on Atonement and Pride & Prejudice. Thanks to MSN, we’ve got the film’s first trailer and a slick new poster you can check out below.

I’m digging the poster for this movie far more than the trailer at this point, and I especially like the giant “AK” in the background. The trailer is pretty chaotic, using a strange rapid-fire editing style near the end that seems to be the standard nowadays — but it doesn’t fit with the time period at all.

Synopsis: The story unfolds in its original late-19th-century Russia high-society setting and powerfully explores the capacity for love that surges through the human heart, from the passion between adulterers to the bond between a mother and her children. As Anna (Knightley) questions her happiness, change comes to her family, friends, and community.
