We heard rumor about this a few weeks ago, but now all of the T’s have been crossed and the I’s have been dotted. Philip Seymour Hoffman has officially signed on to join the cast of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire as Head Gamemaker Plutarch Heavensbee.

    .
With I Am Legend director Francis Lawrence taking over for Gary Ross, I’m really excited to see what new direction the story and visuals in this sequel will take. I Am Legend had a very burned out and overrun look, so we’ll have to see if any of that translates across to the world of Panem, especially with the early stages of rebellion brewing after the events of the first film. Hoffman brings a huge presence to the world of The Hunger Games, and I’m glad that such a well-respected talent is attaching himself to this franchise (similar to the way A-list actors have turned to comic book movies in the past decade). The Hunger Games: Catching Fire comes to theaters on November 22nd, 2013.
    .
Synopsis: THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE begins as Katniss Everdeen has returned home safe after winning the 74th Annual Hunger Games along with fellow tribute Peeta Mellark. Winning means that they must turn around and leave their family and close friends, embarking on a “Victor’s Tour” of the districts. Along the way Katniss senses that a rebellion is simmering, but the Capitol is still very much in control as President Snow prepares the 75th Annual Hunger Games (The Quarter Quell) – a competition that could change Panem forever.

THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE will be directed by Francis Lawrence, and produced by Nina Jacobson’s Color Force in tandem with producer Jon Kilik. The novel on which the film is based is the second in a trilogy that has over 36 million copies in print in the U.S. alone.
